In the past blog post, we wrote a bit about what you would need to do in order to work your way in the product packaging design field.  It is a fabulous line of work that would great appeal to those with artistic minds.  However, you will have to earn an education first, so if you are considering a career with packaging designers, then you will need to find a school that offers a strong graphic arts program.  Here are a few other tips for making the most of that education:

Make Friends Don’t forget that, although this is all about getting the education that you need to start your career, that you are also being presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  This is, very likely, the only time in your life when you will live with-, work with-, and learn with like-minded people.  So, don’t miss your chance to make friendships that could last you for the rest of your time on this earth.  Not only will those people make the college experience that much more wonderful, they can also be some of the most important professional connections you have in future years.  Make friends with your peers, with the professors, administrators, or even other members of the staff, because human connections often trump all else in the business world.

Take the Internship It may not pay anything, or little to nothing, but the experience is the true value.  That time on the job, the connections that you make while doing the work… that can provide you what you need to get your foot in the door with a packaging manufacturers.

Create an Awesome Portfolio In most cases, it is during college that people have the most free-time that they will ever have during the course of their lifetimes.  Be sure that you use it wisely.  If your dream is to design food bags and flexible packaging for food companies, then create a portfolio that will win them over now.  Many employers will ask to see a comprehensive portfolio before hiring you.
